This module provides an overview of the tools and services you'll use to interact with, manage, and monitor your Azure environment. We will cover the different management interfaces, from the graphical portal to command-line tools and infrastructure as code. You'll also learn about Azure's unified monitoring platform, services for proactive health checks, and the suite of tools for DevOps.
Azure Management Interfaces
Azure provides multiple ways to create and manage resources, catering to different preferences and use cases.
| Interface | Type | Details | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Portal | Web-based GUI | A point-and-click interface in your browser. | Visual management, learning Azure, one-off tasks, and viewing dashboards. |
| Azure PowerShell | Command-line | A set of modules for managing Azure from the PowerShell terminal. Verb-Noun cmdlet format (e.g., New-AzVM). | Windows administrators, complex scripting, and automation. |
| Azure CLI | Command-line | A cross-platform command-line tool for managing Azure from Bash or PowerShell. Lowercase command format (e.g., az vm create). | Linux/macOS users, cross-platform scripts, and use in CI/CD pipelines. |
| Azure Cloud Shell | Browser-based terminal | A pre-configured, authenticated terminal accessible from the Azure portal. Includes both PowerShell and CLI. | Quick commands from any machine without needing local installations. |
| ARM Templates / Bicep | Infrastructure as Code | Declarative files (JSON or Bicep) that define your infrastructure. | Repeatable, version-controlled, and automated deployment of environments. |
Azure Resource Manager (ARM)
ARM is the deployment and management service for Azure. It provides a consistent management layer that all the tools above interact with. When you send a request from any Azure tool, API, or SDK, ARM receives it, authenticates and authorizes it, and then routes it to the appropriate Azure service to execute.
Key capabilities of ARM include:
- Declarative Deployment: You define the desired state of your infrastructure, and ARM handles creating or updating it idempotently.
- Access Control: RBAC is enforced by ARM, ensuring all actions are authorized before execution.
- Tagging: ARM applies and manages tags across resources.
- Activity Log: ARM logs all create, update, and delete operations.
Monitoring and Health Services
Azure Monitor
Azure Monitor is the unified, comprehensive monitoring platform for collecting, analyzing, and acting on telemetry from your cloud and on-premises environments. It is the central nervous system for all operational data in Azure.
| Monitor Capability | What It Does | Example Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Metrics | Collects numerical time-series data at regular intervals. | Tracking the CPU percentage of a VM over time. |
| Logs | Collects detailed event records, performance data, and diagnostics. | Querying application logs to find the root cause of an error. |
| Alerts | Notifies you or triggers an action when a condition is met. | Sending an email when CPU usage exceeds 90% for 5 minutes. |
| Autoscale | Automatically adjusts resource capacity based on metrics. | Adding more VM instances to a scale set when request queue length grows. |
Log Analytics Workspace: This is the primary destination for logs collected by Azure Monitor. It's a unique environment for log data where you can run powerful queries using the Kusto Query Language (KQL).
Application Insights: A feature of Azure Monitor, Application Insights is an Application Performance Management (APM) service for developers and DevOps professionals. It automatically detects performance anomalies and includes powerful analytics tools to help you diagnose issues and understand what users actually do with your app.
Azure Service Health
Azure Service Health provides a personalized view of the health of the Azure services and regions you use. It keeps you informed about service issues, planned maintenance, and health advisories.
| Service Health View | Scope | You Use It To... |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Status | All Azure, all regions | See the status of major global outages (the "big picture"). |
| Service Health | Your subscriptions, services, and regions | Get a personalized view of incidents and maintenance affecting you specifically. |
| Resource Health | Individual resources | Check if a specific VM or database is healthy or unavailable due to a platform issue. |
Azure Advisor
Azure Advisor is your personalized cloud consultant. It analyzes your resource configuration and usage telemetry and provides tailored, actionable recommendations to help you optimize your Azure deployments across five pillars:
- Cost: Identify idle or underutilized resources.
- Security: Address security vulnerabilities from Microsoft Defender for Cloud.
- Reliability: Improve the availability of your business-critical applications.
- Operational Excellence: Implement best practices for process and workflow efficiency.
- Performance: Improve the speed and responsiveness of your resources.
Azure DevOps Services
Azure DevOps provides developer services to support teams in planning work, collaborating on code development, and building and deploying applications.
| Service | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Azure Boards | Agile project management and work item tracking (user stories, bugs, tasks). |
| Azure Repos | Unlimited private Git repositories for source code version control. |
| Azure Pipelines | CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) to automatically build, test, and deploy applications. |
| Azure Test Plans | Tools for manual, automated, and exploratory testing. |
| Azure Artifacts | A registry for hosting and sharing private packages like NuGet, npm, and Maven. |
